Can we say DRAMA?

Our family loves us some drama. It comes in all different flavors at the Walton household. Let's see.....lets start with a trip to the Doc in the Box (or in medical terms CareNow). It had been cold and I was really wanting some yummy hot cocoa and coffee mixed together with steamed milk and whipped cream. Sound yummy? It is!

Anyway, I was warming the milk in the microwave. Glass broke....placed in trash...never thought about it again. Cut to the next morning, literally. Ryan takes the trash out and the bag falls off the dolly. Of course, it was the exact trash bag with the broken glass and of course he had to pick it up right where the glass was. Cut to him coming in the house, he says to Sam, "go get mommy". I walk out and he says, "I am going to need stitches". I said "is it that bad?" Ryan "Yes, it is bad". Race to the Carenow where he got a whopping 8 sticthes in a lovely blue thread. Three shots to numb it and his fat pad poking out the cut to boot. Can we say eeeewwwwwww?

Sam had ended up staying home that morning and am I glad. Ryan went to work about lunchtime and one of the little boys used the potty. It had not been flushing well and the plunger was not cutting it so I shut the door and locked it. Potty was off limits. I go to the office and am in there about 5 - 10 minutes when Sam yells that water is all over the floor. What??? I run out and water is already at the barstools in the kitchen and completely in the laundry room. Now, this is bad because the stinkin' door is locked!!! Sam runs and gets a screwdriver to open it and I go in, turn off the water and feel the poopie/peepie water creep into the mesh of my tennis shoes. Can we say eeeeeewwwwww again???

Thankfully, the toilet is next to the garage door and I just swept that water right on out. Kind of like washing the gray right out of my hair. No? Ok, not really. It was a chore but the cutest was Ben and Hayes. I yelled, i need towels from my bathroom get me towels. They ran like the wind squealing all the way. It was big happenings for the them.

That night, Ryan (bummed finger and all) took the toilet off the floor and discovered.....wait for it......wait for it......a home depot toy screwdriver. Lucky screwdriver had apparently had not visited with the other toys to figure out that Mr. Thomas the Train had the same fate a year or so ago. Poor Mr. Screwdriver - can you image what he must have seen? Then, to top it off, he got dumped into a stinky trash to live out his plastic little life in a dump in Arlington, Texas?

Suffice it to say, that was plenty of drama for this mama for a long time!!!!!

Just a side note - Hayes does not like Ryan's "big, purple, wrapped up thumb". He does not want it touching him, he does not want it looking at him, he wants to see it from afar. And he really likes to talk about it and look at it. As long as it is not touching him, he is good.

wishing your life away

So many people rush and rush around like little ants returning to their queen. We live a rushed life full of email/work/internet/cellphones/television. I am not that old - really I am not - and I remember just learning about email and the internet in college and it was in its infancy then. Technology while wonderful has it drawbacks and if you are not careful, you will wind up with your children grown and gone with nothing left but your aging computer and outdated cellphone to keep you warm.

What has happened? Don't we try to enjoy every drop of life especially from our beautiful children? I know that I want to absorb every last laugh, smile, tear, tantrum. I am their mom. That is my job. My priority. My only job that will really impact the world.

What am I doing? Why do I let "white noise" get in the way. That is what it really is - white noise. It is nothing but the buzz of what I think I need to do to get through each day. When the noise fades away, what is left but my adoring children who at this moment think I am wonderwoman/a wonderful cook/a doctor/their chauffeur/ their confidant. Why do I let anything interrupt that?

My mom gave me some food for thought today - she would be so pleased. Why do I live a life of stress? Why don't I let it go? Get help where I need it? Take time off if I need it? Why do I feel sometimes like I have to be superwoman to everyone? I think I get it from my mother. Or is it just being a mother and so many roles are expected of you?

Don't get me wrong, I am very present. I take in the minute details of their little faces down to the precious blond hair above their beautiful lips. I memorize every detail and try to carry it with me. And I do. I have done that since they were babies. But, looking at Sam tonight in bed with his growing body, his still little boyish looks, I realized that even though I do that and have since he was a baby, it will eventually start to blur. It will fade away like a leaf that blooms in spring and falls in winter - in Texas anyway. As he grows, my memories start to wane and magically morph into what he is now rather than what he was. It makes me sad. These boys whom I love more than anything growing before my eyes. Pictures are the only real thing that tells what they were. They also show the wonderful transition into what they are now.

My mom showed me a picture today of her best friend back when she was in high school. My mom said she looked like she did when she met her. She was so happy and so nostalgic for that special time in her life when she met her best friend. That is what I think when I look at the newborn photos of my boys. 40 years or 7, time has a way of passing when you don't realize it. It is hard to be present. It is hard not to let the squabbles/bickering/carpooling, etc of the day to day get to you. You think it will never end but I am assured that it does.

Like I said over the summer when I said "I will strive to be more fun this summer". I will strive to be better at taking in the little things. The day to day. And I will strive to record those memories. For journaling is the only real way I will ever be able to remember the special things that made my days. I have had a journal since I was in 6th grade and was bawling (hee hee) over a horrible haircut. I am so grateful and proud that I have continued to do so.

It is harder to do with children which is one reason I do this blog. However, I will strive to continue to record my feelings/thoughts/opinions so that I can reflect back upon those wonderful things in my life that have shaped me into who I am and into who I will become. I personally think that my children will be lucky to one day know the person that I was, rather than only the mom that they knew. So, thank you mom for making me remember that my life is more than just work/carpools/making dinner. It is about taking time to breath and relax and raise my beautiful boys into the wonderful men that they will become. I only have one chance at this and I intend to make it perfect.

Well, don't know how I became so deep tonight but I did so take it and stuff it!

Moms need a break too

Everyone knows how much my kiddies mean to me. How I adore them and would do anything for them. How the sun would not shine without them. Now, that being said, can I please get a break now and again??

For example: I spent all afternoon today, actually yesterday too, with Sam and when we get home the boys turn on the tv. I need to go to the ladies room so I go back to my room. No sooner do I step into the bathroom then my oldest comes zooming in on his scooter (which is another story) "what are you doing?" he asks. Umm...what does it look like?

Even when Ryan is here, it does not matter. We can both be in the kitchen in silence doing whatever and the kids will be doing their thing and I leave for a nano second and boom, here comes a kid following me saying "what you doing?" Does that happen to Ryan? Nooooo.

I can be back in the bedroom folding laundry and the kids will zoom in and out like a fricking pendulum on a clock - back and forth, back and forth, into my room then to the kitchen and then back again...over...and over... and over until my brain wants to explode. Why does that drive me crazy? The screaming that accompanies it? The shrieking that goes with it? Oh, I don't know, maybe a psychiatrist could help me out here.

I mentioned in my last post that I might develop a crazy facial tick today or tomorrow with the kids being out of school and the weather being yucky and everyone having cabin fever. The good news, it has not developed yet. The bad news, I still have another full day in the trenches.

Will This Cold Ever End??

I mean, for heaven's sake, we do live in Texas!! What in the world is mother nature thinking making it be cold here for this long? If it is going to be cold then it should darn well be snowing here! I live in Texas for a reason. No, not because I was born and raised in Texas, afterall I am an adult with a mature brain that can make her own decisions. It is because I love Texas weather - that and friends and family of course!

So, what the heck? All I want to do is curl up on the couch with a book - or the remote - and huddle by the fire. Thankfully, eating is not something that is high on my bored/cold/freezing/want to get warm list. Chalk one point up for braces.

Tonight we decided, enough with the cold crap, it is time for the hot tub. So, hot tub we did. I love that thing, especially with the children. Hayes loves to jump and splash while Ben likes to have the floatie ring and go all around. And then Sam likes to monitor the whole situation. My little redheaded darling!

MLK day is Monday and then we also have a student holiday Tuesday - never had that stuff when I was in school and now I know why. The parents boycotted and NEVER allowed it to happen!! For crying out loud, we just had Christmas break that seemed to loom and last forever - no just kidding, it did not loom and last forever. But, really, another frickin' break??

Wish me luck that I survive without getting some kind of crazy facial tick trying to keep my patience!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Do not do it

For those of you contemplating braces, do not do it. They hurt and they hurt bad. My teeth hurt, my lips are bruised and the inside of my mouth is cut. Me no likey.

17 again

Well, thanks to a small space between my teeth that has gradually gotten larger and uglier, I am now the proud wearer of braces. Yep, braces. I am not very pleased but what can you do? I look like I belong in high school and Ryan actually had the nerve to call me "brace face" last night. Oh, how i thought I was out of high school.

I pick up the boys from school yesterday and show them my new temporary smile. Here is what they had to say:

Ben: mom your teeth falling out?
Me: No, just some braces.

Sam "can you take those out?"
Me: "No"
Sam: Not at all?
Me: No
Sam: Not even at night?
Me: No

Hayes: "daddy, mommy got new teeth"

My teeth hurt, my lips hurt and my top one is puffed out like a duck. I feel like Taylor from Beverly Hills Housewives - duckmouth. It ain't pretty. The only somewhat silver lining in this, well besides that my teeth will be fixed, is that I can't bite into anything so I will have to pick and choose carefully what I eat and how I eat.

Will keep you posted as to the progress of my transformation.

Christmas Holiday

What a wonderful Christmas we all had. The excitement my children had as the countdown to Christmas got closer was so fun. I always have loved Christmas but, of course, seeing it through your children makes it even more magical and special.

Sam was nearly crazy with excitement Christmas Eve. We went to church and it was a cold, rainy evening. I love it when it is cloudy and cold for Christmas, it gives a cozy feeling at home with all the lights and fire. Anyway, church was great and the kids were so well behaved. As the lights dimmed at the end of the service and "Silent Night" was sung, I really thought that I would make it through it without crying and then the second verse hit and BOOM. Tears a-flowing. "Silent Night" is a special song to our family as it was a favorite of my grandfather's. I still can hear his deep voice singing it at Christmas Eve service in Kansas with the snow outside and the smell of incense inside with the knowledge that Santa was on his way. Needless to say, I think of him when I hear it and it is a happy memory tinged with sadness.

We went home and prepared for Santa and his reindeer. We put out reindeer food - which is something I never heard of as a child but apparently teachers have a special mixture they prepare and send home. We got our cookies and chocolate milk ready and put the children to bed. Sam could hardly keep his eyes closed and had a hard a time getting to sleep.

Christmas morning, Sam crawls in bed at 7 or so..."Do you think Santa has been here?" he asked. I said "Of course!" Not long after, Hayes crawled in bed..."Do you think Santa has come?" he asked. I said "I sure bet he did". They was so cute and excited! Ben took the morning as opportunity to sleep in and we woke him about 7:15. We all waited in our bedroom while daddy readied the house. Oh, they were so excited and cute they could barely stand it. When the time finally arrived to see what Santa had brought, they were bursting. It was so much fun.

And then, it was over before it had begun and I was sad - all that buildup and poof, it is over. Oh well, they had a great Christmas. My mom and dad came over for lunch and we celebrated with them. Ryan's family came over that evening for dinner and we celebrated with them. We had a wonderful Christmas. It was wonderful and we felt so blessed and thankful.

Then, before you know it, back to school and the grindstone. Happy New Year!!
